Tension Brews in Kano as APC and NNPP Stakeholders Plan Demonstrations Following Appeal Court Judgment

The city of Kano is bracing for heightened tension as stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have scheduled street demonstrations for Saturday. The unrest stems from the recent judgment of the Appeal Court, which ousted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the APC as the winner of the March 18 election in the state.

Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, the Director-General of the Gawuna/Garo Campaign Organisation, announced these plans during a press conference at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday. Bichi, accompanied by other stakeholders, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, former commissioners, ex-special advisers, and APC stalwarts, revealed that both the NNPP and the APC would hold separate demonstrations on the same day.

While the NNPP plans to stage a mass protest in Kano on Saturday, the APC is organizing a mass rally, according to Bichi. The announcement comes in the wake of a controversial Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment, which initially indicated that Governor Yusuf won the appeal, creating confusion and subsequent tensions.

When questioned about the decision to hold a mass rally amidst the NNPP's planned protest, Bichi responded, "We are also going for a mass rally on Saturday as part of democracy." He emphasized that they are law-abiding citizens and pledged not to disrupt peace but affirmed their commitment to protecting lives and belongings if necessary.

The situation raises concerns about potential clashes and the need for security measures to maintain order in Kano during these demonstrations. The government and law enforcement agencies will likely be closely monitoring the events to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent any escalation of tensions.
