FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) Announces Upward Review of Traffic Offence Fines

 The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has revealed plans to implement an upward review of fines for traffic offences, increasing penalties from N2,000 to N5,000 and as high as N300,000 for specific violations.

Kalu Emetu, the Director of Public Relations at DRTS, made this announcement during an enlightenment exercise conducted in selected motor parks in the FCT. Emetu explained that the objective of this adjustment is to encourage motorists to take traffic rules and regulations more seriously.

Emetu clarified that the specific amount of fines imposed would depend on the nature and gravity of the traffic offence committed. For example, in cases where a motorist obstructs a road, leading to significant traffic congestion, the vehicle will be impounded immediately, and the offender will face a hefty fine of N300,000.

Furthermore, Emetu mentioned that if the culprit fails to appear within one week, the DRTS will seek a court order for the forfeiture of the impounded vehicle. Once the forfeiture order is granted, the property becomes government-owned, leaving the government with discretion on how to dispose of it.

The decision to review traffic offence fines aims to enhance road safety, reduce traffic violations, and ensure better adherence to traffic laws in the FCT. It also serves as a deterrent against reckless driving and behavior that contributes to traffic congestion and accidents.

Motorists and residents in the FCT are advised to be aware of these changes and to exercise caution and responsibility while using the road to avoid incurring penalties and potential vehicle forfeitures.
