Tinubu Expresses Concerns Over Niger's Political Crisis, Sends Religious Leaders For Talk

In a recent meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), former Lagos State Governor and prominent Nigerian political figure, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, shared his thoughts on the unfolding political crisis in Niger. The discussion took place at the State House and centered on the delicate situation involving Niger's military junta.

Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the NSCIA for their active engagement in fostering dialogues with the military junta in Niger. He voiced his strong disapproval of the forceful removal of the democratic government in the country, labeling it as "wholly unacceptable."

In the presence of the delegation led by Muhammad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, and Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Tinubu acknowledged the leadership role played by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in addressing the crisis.

As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu drew attention to the gravity of the situation. He highlighted that while the possibility of military intervention couldn't be entirely ruled out, it was an outcome that all parties involved wished to avoid. Tinubu cited the example of Gabon and expressed concern that such actions might become a trend unless curtailed swiftly.

Tinubu's comments echoed the sentiment that a peaceful resolution was imperative to maintain regional stability. He underscored the close relationship between Niger and Nigeria, emphasizing that the bond between the two nations and their people was unbreakable. Reflecting on the turmoil caused by conflicts in other parts of the world, such as Ukraine and Sudan, Tinubu stressed the importance of addressing the situation swiftly.

Addressing the Sultan of Sokoto, Tinubu urged continued efforts in seeking a resolution. He stated, "Your Eminence, please don't get tired, you will still go back there. The soldiers' action is unacceptable. The earlier they make positive adjustments, the quicker we will dial back the sanctions to alleviate the sufferings we are seeing in Niger."

The Sultan of Sokoto, who had been part of an ECOWAS delegation to Niger led by Abdulsalami Abubakar, has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to engage with Niger's military junta. The focus on dialogue and diplomatic negotiations reflects the collective regional concern for stability and peace.

Tinubu's remarks underscore the importance of regional collaboration, diplomacy, and swift resolution in preventing the escalation of political crises.
