High Court Bars EFCC, ICPC, and CCB from Investigating Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission

August 29, 2023 - A Kano State high court has issued an order suspending the participation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in investigations related to the Kano Anti-Corruption Commission.

According to a report by SOLACEBASE newspaper, the EFCC and CCB had requested an investigation into the activities of the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission and its chairman, Barista Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado. In response to this, the high court issued an interim order last Monday to prevent the EFCC, ICPC, and CCB from interfering in the affairs of the state anti-corruption agency.

The plaintiffs in the case include the Attorney General of Kano State, the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission, and Barista Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado. The defendants, on the other hand, are the EFCC, CCB, and ICPC.

Justice Farouk Lawan Adamu, who presided over the case, explained that the order was issued as an interim measure to prevent any interference by the defendants in the affairs of the plaintiffs or their employees. The order prevents the defendants and their representatives from taking actions such as inviting, threatening, expelling, arresting, or otherwise interfering with the employees or individuals under the service of the plaintiffs.

The court adjourned the case hearing to September 25, 2023, in order to further examine the details of the case and make a determination based on the evidence presented. The order comes as a response to the ongoing dispute between the Kano Anti-Corruption Commission and the federal anti-corruption agencies over investigations into alleged corrupt practices.
