APC Cross River Challenges NDDC Board Appointment, Asserts State's Right

Party Protests Nominee, Asserting Rightful Representation

The recent appointment of board members and a management team for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked controversy, particularly in Cross River state. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River has raised objections to the appointment of a particular nominee, underscoring their belief that the state should rightfully have a say in the commission.

In response to the appointment, the APC in Cross River expressed its disagreement, specifically addressing the nomination of Okang. The party, holding the position that Cross River is the only state in the south-south region under APC leadership, asserted that the state should have a significant role in the commission's affairs.

In a public statement made in Calabar, the state capital, a representative of the APC reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the state's interests in the commission. Emmanuel Otu, who addressed the protesters, articulated their stance on the matter, emphasizing that Cross River's representation was essential due to the state's political alignment and leadership in the south-south region.

"We will not allow anybody to preside or sit on what is our own sovereignty," Otu conveyed to the gathering. He emphasized that the party's position was not driven by a desire for conflict but rather by a desire for the rightful representation of the state's interests. Otu further stated, "We will never allow it... We are the only APC state in the south-south and if there is anybody to superintend the list, not just in Cross River State but in the South-South geopolitical zone, I believe that I have the mandate."

Acknowledging that their protest aimed at upholding their rights within the framework of the law, Otu assured the crowd that President Muhammadu Buhari would be informed about their concerns and that a resolution would be sought.

This incident highlights the complexities of political representation and power dynamics within a federal system. The assertion of state rights in this context underscores the significance of equitable distribution of opportunities and resources among regions to foster unity and cooperation.

As political discussions continue to shape the nation's landscape, such events underscore the importance of effective communication, negotiation, and adherence to established protocols to resolve matters of representation and governance.
